Pregnancy And Various Kinds Of Ovarian Cysts

One woman described how she'd had two miscarriages already. The first one was at 21 weeks, the second was at eight weeks. And she found out during her second pregnancy that she had a dermoid cyst on her right ovary. And she writes in that we consulted a doctor that said it wasn’t the cause of my miscarriage, and can I still try getting pregnant? It was almost a year passed since I had my second miscarriage, and I'm trying to get pregnant, but what I just observed with myself now is I can't get pregnant as easily now like before, any advice? First of all, the first advice is she had two miscarriages, miscarriages are extremely common. Twenty percent of all pregnancies miscarry before 12 weeks, it's nature's way of ridding vaginetic products. The miscarriage at 21 weeks was rather unusual. I'm assuming that this was something that was looked into, and probably was not a cause of anything that would repeat itself. The dermoid cyst on her right ovary, well if she knows she had a dermoid cyst on the right ovary, that must have been removed. We were probably given part of the information because no doctor's going to leave a dermoid cyst. As far as her so-called - her concerns about infertility since that dermoid cyst, pregnancy is not as easy as one thinks. Pregnancy - the average couple who have intercourse the average number of times, which is 2.5 times per week will conceive 90 percent of the time in one year, in two years 95 percent. But you still have ten percent that are not going to conceive in one year. So one year of lack of conception is not an infertility concern in my mind. So my advice is just continue trying, don’t worry about the cyst, and hopefully pregnancy number three will be absolutely normal. Let's see, there was something else here. Oh, there is an increasing number of women - since we mentioned some drugs, we should mention Tamoxifen. Tamoxifen is an anti-breast cancer drug, the most commonly used. Women are often on it five years, very effective. The good news is Tamoxifen works, being an anti-estrogen effect on the breast, it stops the estrogen receptors. Because breast tumors many times have - they like estrogen. So this particular anti-cancer drug works by blocking estrogen. But it has some good news too, it has a positive estrogen effect on bone and on the heart. And we know that estrogen can be good for bone growth, that's why many women are given estrogens after menopause. And it can be good on bone growth and prevent heart disease. The one problem with women on this particular drug though is that it causes in some cases a slight increase in uterus cancers, because it has the positive estrogen effect on the uterus. And it can in some cases increase any cysts that are there. But to my knowledge there is no evidence that it can cause ovary cancers. So we have some effects from this powerful anti-breast cancer drug that are positive, no ovary bad effects except it can cause an increased size in the cysts. And these would be managed like any other cysts. I think one thing here is - one woman writes in and she says is surgery a must for a cyst measuring 20 centimeters? 20 centimeters is huge. Greater than 10 centimeters is huge. The answer is unequivocally 20-centimeter cyst is in risk of torsion, it should be operated upon, no questions asked. And we don’t know the age of this woman, but the odds are most likely in her favor because it's a cyst. And the other one here is - I have one question I think is very good. Is a hysterectomy the best option for an ovary cyst on a 68-year-old woman, any other options? I'm going to answer that because I'm from the school of thought that says if you're going in for a hysterectomy in the menopausal years, I believe those ovaries should come out. Now this is Doctor Christopher Freeville's philosophy, many colleagues agree with me, some do not. But the ovary has very little function after menopause. At menopause it doesn’t have any except it can serve as a place for bad tumors and bad cysts to grow. So if for some reason one has to have a hysterectomy at the menopausal time in life, my strong recommendation would be discussed with your doctor should the ovaries come out. Because unfortunately, ovary cancers, which are not really the topic of this discussion, often don’t show up and have symptoms until they're somewhat progressed. That's something I wanted to throw in there.

WHAT IS AN ECTOPIC PREGNANCY?

The dictionary definition of the word ‘Ectopic’ is an organ or body part existing in an unusual position or form. In simple terms, an ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy, which is developing in the wrong place. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fertilized egg (or ovum) fails to move down the fallopian tube and into the womb (or uterus) in the normal manner. Instead, the egg or ovum implants itself outside of the womb. Most often, (in 95% of cases), ectopic pregnancies develop in a fallopian tube and rarely, elsewhere in the abdominal cavity or pelvic area. For example, an egg can attach itself on an ovary, on the neck of the womb (cervix) or on another organ within the pelvic or abdominal area (1.5% abdominal, 0.5% ovarian & 0.03% cervical). Ectopic pregnancies do not usually survive and many will result in a spontaneous miscarriage, others will develop until a serious problem becomes apparent, which will require immediate medical attention.

WHAT CAUSES AN ECTOPIC PREGNANCY?

Sometimes the ovum fails to implant itself and it becomes fertilized outside of the reproductive system. More commonly, the fertilized ovum is trapped, in the fallopian tube and the baby continues to grow inside the tube where it can cause the tube to burst or otherwise severely damage it. A burst tube is life threatening and requires urgent medical attention. In many cases, ectopic pregnancies occur when the expectant mother has damaged fallopian tube(s). Tubes damaged, by infections such as pelvic inflammatory disease or by previous surgery, scar tissue, endometriosis or previous ectopic pregnancies are a high-risk factor, which significantly, increase the likelihood of a pregnancy being ectopic. Another risk factor associated with ectopic pregnancies is becoming pregnant, whilst using a contraceptive-coil or a progestogen only contraceptive pill. Pregnancies resulting from in vitro fertilization (i.e. test-tube methods) can be ectopic - even though, the fertilized egg is placed directly into the womb, it may still attach itself elsewhere. In some cases, none of the above risk factors are present in the expectant mother.

WHAT ARE THE WARNING SIGNS OF AN ECTOPIC PREGNANCY?

Pain In the Abdomen - The first sign of an ectopic pregnancy can be a pain on one side of the abdomen. This pain can be constant and severe and its onset, sudden. Pain in the Shoulder - An alternative warning sign could be a pain in the shoulder, which intensifies when breathing in and out. Pain Using the Lavatory - If you suspect you are pregnant and experience pain during visits to the bathroom you should report this to your medical practitioner. Other Warning Signs Vaginal bleeding or unusual periods, lighter or heavier than normal, or a strange color etc Sickness Diarrhea Pallid complexion (paleness) Light-headedness Collapse Increasing pulse rate Falling blood pressure

DIAGNOSING AN ECTOPIC PREGNANCY

Ectopic pregnancies can be hard to detect as in many cases, the symptoms are no different from those of a normal, early pregnancy, i.e. tender breasts, nausea, vomiting, missed periods or frequent urination. If you are a sexually active woman of childbearing age and you experience symptoms of an early pregnancy plus any, of the above warning signs, of an ectopic pregnancy, contact your medical practitioner immediately. A urine pregnancy test will usually be positive but is not always apparent. However, a specialized hCG blood test will always show a positive result. If a pregnancy is ectopic, the womb will often be smaller than the average womb at that stage of pregnancy and this will be detected during an internal pelvic examination. A doctor can sometimes detect a swelling, during an internal examination, which is evidence of an ectopic pregnancy existing. An ultrasound scan will differentiate between a possible miscarriage, a normal pregnancy and an ectopic pregnancy. The majority of women diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy will require surgical intervention and/or medication. In the worst-case scenario, without this intervention, an ectopic pregnancy can be fatal to the mother. Medical and technological advancements mean that ectopic pregnancies are easier to detect than ever before and therefore, they carry less risk than they did in previous years. Technological advancements have significantly improved the treatment of ectopic pregnancies - keyhole surgery is just one example of this. It is vital to seek the opinion of a medical practitioner if you suspect you are carrying an ectopic pregnancy.

Breastfeeding

Did you know that breastfeeding enhances the contraction of the uterus and helps it return to its normal pregnancy state more rapidly? This is another benefit mothers will enjoy from this healthy habit.

Experts say there is less blood loss after delivery and nursing mothers lose weight more quickly after having their first child. More importantly, breastfeeding delays menstruation and postpones fertility. As long as she continues nursing, a woman is less likely to become pregnant again. On its own, however, breastfeeding is not a reliable means of birth control.

"Fat is deposited during pregnancy as a reserve for lactation. If the mother nurses for a significant period of time this fat is easily used up. But if she fails to nurse, it is far more difficult to get rid of. Lactation may even be a good time for an overweight woman to lose weight. Energy expended by lactation is like performing vigorous exercise all day long. By moderate dietary restriction and by ensuring the availability of adequate amounts of essential nutrients, a nursing mother may lose significant weight and still provide adequate amounts of high quality milk to her infant," said Dr. Myron Winick in The Columbia Encyclopedia of Nutrition. There's more: breastfeeding is economical. There's no need to worry about sterilizing bottles, the right formula to buy or how to prepare it. Even if your baby cries in the middle of the night, you don't have to grope in the dark for her bottle. That's convenience and it comes only with breastfeeding.
To produce more milk for her child, all the mother has to do is to eat a well balanced diet, especially foods rich in calcium, iron and water-soluble vitamins. "If the mother is anemic this will certainly affect the iron content of the milk. In order to safeguard against such a situation, foods high in iron should be included in the diet in good amounts," Winick said. "The vitamin content of breast milk is extremely sensitive to the maternal vitamin status, especially with regard to the water-soluble vitamins. For this reason, plenty of citrus fruits should be eaten for their vitamin C supply and plenty of fortified and whole grains for the B complex vitamins. In addition, most physicians recommend the nursing mother continue the prenatal vitamin supplement," he added. All other things considered, perhaps the best thing about breastfeeding is the special bond that develops between mother and child. Researchers believe this special relationship gives a great deal of emotional satisfaction to both parties and may, in fact, contribute to the child's development.

Finally, certain hormones are released as a result of suckling and some women have described the experience of breastfeeding as similar to sexual orgasm.

"Many women who have successfully breast-fed describe nursing as the most pleasurable experience of their lives -an experience that cannot be duplicated and should not be missed."

Problems That Overweight Women Face During Conception or Pregnancy

Results from a research showed that women who are overweight or obese have lower chances of conceiving a child in comparison to those with normal weight. The study has followed the cases of about 3,000 couples and found that women who have a body mass index of 35 are 26% less likely to conceive a child than those with a BMI of 21 to 29. Furthermore, the chance of conception in women with a BMI of 40 is 43% lower than women with normal weight. Experts speculate that hormonal imbalance, which is common in overweight and obese individuals, is one of the major reasons for the inability to conceive a baby. Moreover, several studies have already proven that obesity can play a role in the disruption of ovulation so women who are obese have lower pregnancy rates. If you and your partner are finding it difficult to conceive a child, it might be best that you start to lose a little weight to help improve your chances of success. It is also important to note that in order to have a healthy baby, a woman should start preparing herself physically, emotionally and mentally to ensure that her body is capable of supporting and rearing a fetus. Nonetheless, if you are obese and overweight, conceiving a child should be the least of your worries. If in case you get pregnant, there are a lot of health risks for you and baby. Lastly, there is also a high chance for your child to suffer from childhood obesity, congenital heart problems and defects, and even digestive, breast and blood cancers.

Tips On How To Reach Your Ideal Weight Before Conception

Having a healthy and intelligent baby is not all in the genes. If you want to increase the chances of your baby being healthy and free from complications, you need to make your body healthy first. Your body will be a vessel for the fetus to grow and develop. If the vessel is damaged or is not in a good condition, there is a risk that whatever it is carrying will also be damaged or worse, will be spilled out.

Eat Healthy

The best way to lose weight is to be conscious of what you are eating. Even if you exercise, if you do not watch what you are eating, your weight loss will not be fast and permanent. It is better to get away from processed, fast, and fatty foods. Since pregnant women also have a higher risk of getting gestational diabetes, it might be wise for you to go easy on the sugar and other sugar-filled products. Furthermore, you will need all the vitamins and nutrients from fruits and vegetables to prepare your body for carrying a fetus.

Exercise Regularly

Since pregnant women are prone to blood clots and other illnesses, it is best for you to start improving your blood circulation and lymphatic systems before you start conceiving. Exercise is also important in strengthening your bones, toning your muscles, and shedding unwanted fat.

PCOS and Fertility

One of the leading causes of infertility in women is a condition known as PCOS (PolyCystic Ovary Syndrome). This condition is known as the hidden epidemic as it is estimated that one in ten women around the world suffers from PCOS! While the condition has many symptoms such as weight gain, acne, ovarian cysts, insulin resistance and of course PCOS and fertility are closely linked.

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a subtle condition as there is nothing overly easy to spot in terms of symptoms which are caused by a hormonal imbalance. PCOS makes a woman's ovaries produce male hormones like testosterone which are called androgenic hormones. This interferes with many functions of a woman's body especially when reproduction is involved. Irregular periods may be one sign that PCOS is active and unbalancing your reproductive system but the whole menstrual cycle may be affected by these problems that can make it very hard to be fertile and conceive.

Modern medicine has some relatively little to curb PCOS and its effect on fertility providing some drugs that often have harsh side effects and are often prescribed as courses you need to continue but when stopped do not get rid of the problem itself. There has been much greater success with alternative medicine and especially homeopathic solutions that involve lifestyle changes which monitor diet, exercise, sleep patterns and more. These sorts of non pharmaceutical solutions are sometimes shunned by mainstream media and doctors but there are hardly any risks involved and the number of success stories keep mounting to challenge current thinking on the matter.

If you are concerned with PCOS and fertility then you must understand there is no quick fix but you have options in the non-mainstream health industry that has been proven to help thousands of women looking for childbirth despite their condition.

If you are one of the estimated 10% of women who suffer from this condition you may have serious problems when trying to conceive because of the odd hormonal imbalance in your body. This means PCOS and getting pregnant are not a good mix and even if you do become pregnant the chance of miscarriage is much higher than other women!
The problem with PCOS is the increased levels of male hormones such as testosterone that defective ovaries produce. While all women have some testosterone it is only about one seventh of what a man has and the female body is not built to have so much of this hormone. This condition seriously affects a woman's menstrual cycle as it interferes with the hormone signals that tell the various parts of the body when they need to release the egg and build up the womb to be ready for a possible baby. Women may suffer from irregular menstrual cycles that are too far apart or too close together or sometimes not at all! Picking the right time to become pregnant through all of this and a confused body is very hard and is risky for the baby as well.
So how do you know if you have PCOS? Obviously if your menstrual cycle is irregular you may have PCOS but it also causes other problems such as weight gain, acne, facial hair and mood swings. You can only be sure if you check up with your health care professional but with PCOS being such a widespread condition with an estimated 10% of all women suffering from it to some extent this should be a cause for concern for many.
So if you want a family and are worried about PCOS and getting pregnant you need to be sure you have the condition. IF you do suffer from PCOS then there is some good news, you have options. Recently though modern medicine has only harsh drugs and hormone injections, natural homeopathic treatments have become popular and successful with a great many women who have gone onto to give birth and overcome PCOS by adjusting their lifestyle so the body regulates its hormones better despite the condition.

Important For Women Practicing Prenatal Yoga

Although prenatal yoga is a safe form of pregnancy exercise for pregnant women, every woman’s body is different and requires attention and awareness during any exercise to ensure the body’s well being. Please obtain permission from your doctor, midwife or health provider before doing any prenatal exercise and most important, listen to your body. If you begin to feel over heated or fatigued, stop and rest in child’s pose and resume your practice once you have cooled down or your body has recovered.

When you are pregnant your body changes every day. Some days a certain pose may feel wonderful and other days the same pose may not feel good at all. The most important guideline for prenatal yoga is one that is practiced in all yoga-- non-violence to yourself. This means allowing and embracing the limitations that pregnancy puts on your body and only doing poses that feel good. This is especially important for pregnant women because as the baby grows he or she changes positions often and there are times a certain pose may not be conducive to the position of the baby. Forcing positions because you have always been able to do them or because you were able to do them one way or not the other is inappropriate and may cause injury.

When you become pregnant your body releases a hormone called relaxing which lubricates the joints and softens connective tissue allowing the pelvis to open up to accommodate the baby. However, this hormone is not specific to the pelvis; it affects every other joint as well and can create instability in the joints, this is why you hear many pregnant women complaining of carpel tunnel syndrome. Therefore, you need to take care not to overstretch. Being pregnant is an amazing time in your life. Prenatal Yoga offers you the ability to maintain or achieve a strong, flexible and centered- body, mind and spirit in an ever changing physical form. Pregnancy is composed of three trimesters each about three months long. In each trimester there are specific poses that are beneficial for the pregnant body; some of these poses help with discomforts in the body, and others help to strengthen the body in preparation for labor and childbirth. Many prenatal yoga poses can be modified for you while you are pregnant. You will want to separate your legs when doing any forward bending leaving enough room for your belly to easily fit between your legs. You should avoid lying on your belly throughout pregnancy (this will be very uncomfortable anyway). With the appropriate modifications prenatal yoga can be practiced right up to labor and delivery. Prenatal Yoga can be started anytime in pregnancy even in the last month as long as you listen to your body, only do poses that feel good, and practice with someone knowledgeable in prenatal yoga. Also, if you feel any pain in your back, knees or abdominal area you should come out of the pose you are in. And if you feel any menstrual-like cramping at any time, you should stop and rest. Typically before doing prenatal yoga it is best to abstain from eating for at least two hours. When you are pregnant that might not be possible. Since the stomach has less room and you are “eating for two,” you may need to have a light snack or a juice or smoothie an hour before practicing.

Stretch Marks and Pregnancy

Stretch marks occur when the skin is stretched and although it is common in people that are obese or for growing children and body builders it is one of the curses that every pregnant women dreads. Normal skin has a certain amount of elasticity but when it is overstretched like during pregnancy scars result that many women are very embarrassed about. When the skin begins stretching during pregnancy red or purplish lines appear over the abdomen and to the touch it feels like you have indentations in your skin like a washboard. The severity of the stretch marks during pregnancy can be different according to the size of your pregnancy and some women are horrified to see that their once silky smooth skin now looks like a lot of train tracks. Even worse multiple pregnancies can make stretch marks even deeper and harder to treat afterwards. Stretch marks are usually found on the abdomen, breasts, buttocks, legs, and upper arms. There are many different products and methods on the market to reduce the visibility of stretch markets for pregnant women so there is hope.

Aloe Vera Extract is a great Stretch mark treatment

Aloe Vera is a product used in many skin care moisturizing creams and lotions and after a number of clinical studies it has been proven to have effective anti-inflammatory and skin healing properties. During pregnancy when your stretch marks start appearing as fine lines then you should start using Aloe Vera based creams which will helps heal these small wounds without causing the formation of scar tissue. Following a daily regimen of moisturizing your skin with superior quality skin care products like cocoa butter, will increase the skins elasticity properties and after pregnancy stretch marks may not be as serious as they would be otherwise. They key to managing your stretch marks is going to be on how disciplined you are going to be in taking care of your skin while you are pregnant. The better your skin is moisturized while your baby is growing the better it is going to be for you afterwards in managing your stretch marks.

Prevention is better than cure

Although like anything else prevention is better than cure pregnant women are going to suffer stretch marks almost without exception. There are certain treatments that can be followed which will hasten to fade stretch marks but some discipline needs to be enforced by yourself to ensure that after your skin returns to normal after the birth of your child the stretch marks will all but disappear or become hardly noticeable. Just as the stretch marks appeared on your skin over a period of time, the same will go for getting rid of them. Just like in any other cosmetic industry there are a variety of fake products promising instant stretch marks solutions. Check them out carefully before you buy anything.
